On October 19 2018, Istanbul New Airport opened as an international airport in the Arnavutkoy neighborhood on Istanbul’s European side. With 150 million people per year, the airport is expected to be the biggest in the world. After Sabiha Gokcen International Airport and Istanbul Atatürk Airport, it is the third international airport to be constructed in Istanbul. Following the opening of the new airport, Ataturk Airport was closed. The Republic of Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, inaugurated Turkey’s newest airport on October 19, 2018.

The first flight was made from Istanbul to Ankara on 29 October 2018 with the code TK2124. When all phases are completed, the airport will have two terminals with a capacity of 200 million passengers per year and six independent runways. In addition, the airport is planned to be large enough to accommodate 225,000 workers and land 114 aircraft at the same time when the four-phase construction is completed.
