Description
The earliest written historical record in Sakarya dates back to 1200 B.C., when the Phrygians, the earliest civilization, settled here. In 378 A.D., the Bithynia Empire built a sophisticated settlement here.
Although the Ottomans eventually drove the Byzantines out of the region in the fourteenth century, the first Turkish invasion occurred in the eleventh century. The main portion of the Vecihi Gate, which still stands, was constructed on the Silk Road by renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The most notable Ottoman architectural examples in the province are the Rahime Sultan Mosque, Hasan Fehmi Pasa Mosque, Cami Cedid Mosque, and Rustem Pasa Mosque. In front of Sakarya government office are Byzantine tombs and sarcophaguses that were found during road construction.

Sapanca Lake
Sapanca Lake, located two hours away from Istanbul, is located in Kocaeli City.
